This box is an expression of my woodworking journey — a fusion of the multicultural materials and techniques I have seen, touched, felt, and learned throughout my travels.

The exterior is crafted from 1,000-year-old Australian red gum, representing the land where I have spent more than half my life. Inside, the drawers are made of traditional Aizu paulownia from Japan, joined using the classic sashimono technique. Together they symbolise that, no matter where I wander, my heart and attitude toward woodworking remain deeply Japanese.

Each drawer appears empty, yet it holds something invisible — my memories. A hidden karakuri mechanism is built within: when one drawer is closed, the next gently opens, as if inviting you deeper into the story. When you finally reach the top box, a small key is revealed, unlocking the largest compartment below. There, you may place wood samples, photographs, or other treasures collected on your own journey.

This piece is a reminder that, like a true journeyman, we should never stop walking, learning, and passing on the skills and knowledge we have gathered along the way.

この箱は、私が旅の中で見て、触れて、感じ、学んできた多様な文化の素材と技術を織り交ぜ、私の木工のバックグラウンドを表現した作品です。

外装には、千年以上もの時を生きるオーストラリア古木のレッドガムを使用しています。これは、私が人生の半分以上を過ごした大地を象徴しています。一方、内部の引き出しには日本の伝統的な会津桐を用い、指物の技法で組み上げました。これは、どこへ旅しても、私の「心」と木工に対する姿勢は今も日本人であることを表しています。

それぞれの引き出しは一見空っぽですが、そこには目に見えない「記憶」が確かに宿っています。 引き出しを閉めると、次の引き出しがそっと開く——そんな目に見えないからくりが仕込まれています。一番上の箱にたどり着くと、最後の大きな収納部を開けるための小さな鍵が見つかります。そこには、旅で集めた木のサンプルや写真など、あなた自身の大切な宝物を収めることができます。

この作品は、まさに「人生の旅人（Journeyman）」のように、 私たちは決して歩みを止めず、技術と知識を学び続け、次の世代へと伝えていくべきだというメッセージを込めています。
