Shinobu Kobayashi, who has Japanese heritage, began his woodworking career in Australia in 2002.
In 2011, he faced a major turning point when his sharpened chisel slipped in his small garage, severing three tendons in his arm. While recovering from the injury, he received devastating news: a massive earthquake had struck the northeast coast of Japan, and the ensuing tsunami had devastated his father’s hometown. “It was the most frustrating moment of my life — I could do nothing,” he recalls.
This unforgettable event spurred him into action. One year later, he enrolled at Capellagården, one of Europe’s most prestigious fine craft schools in Sweden, where he spent four years studying design and traditional Scandinavian woodworking. During this period he also studied as a guest student at the Krenov School of Fine Furniture in the United States and apprenticed under a designated master sashimono craftsman in Japan. His experiences across four countries deepened his conviction that preserving traditional skills is essential, ultimately shaping his distinctive design and woodworking style.
In 2016, Shinobu received a Silver Medal from the Kingdom of Sweden after achieving near-perfect scores in the national examination for skilled craftsmen. He was also invited to become a member of the Danish Cabinetmakers Association in Copenhagen and participated in an exhibition at the Design Museum Denmark in 2017.
Now based in Melbourne, Shinobu has recently become a resident artist at Montsalvat — Australia’s oldest continuously active artists’ community. Here, in this beautiful heritage setting, he continues to create fine handcrafted pieces while inspiring others to explore and preserve traditional Japanese and Scandinavian woodworking skills, both locally and around the world.
日本の伝統文化を深く尊重する小林 忍は、2002年からオーストラリアで家具職人としての道を歩み始めました。
2011年、自宅の小さなガレージで研いだ鑿を滑らせ、腕の腱を3本切ってしまうというアクシデントに見舞われました。これが自身のキャリアを見直す最初の大きな転機となりました。リハビリに励む中で耳にしたのは、日本の東北地方を襲った大地震と、それに伴う津波で遠く離れた父の故郷が壊滅したという衝撃のニュースでした。 「何もできない自分が一番悔しかった」と彼は語ります。
この忘れられない出来事が彼を行動へと駆り立てました。事故から1年後、彼はヨーロッパ屈指の名門クラフトスクール「カペラゴーデン（Capellagården）」に4年間留学します。スウェーデンとデンマークで北欧のデザインと伝統的な工芸技術を学びながら、アメリカのThe Krenov School of Fine Furnitureでは特別ゲスト学生として学び、また日本では江戸指物の指定無形文化財保持者のもとに弟子入りしました。4カ国での多彩な経験を通じて、伝統技術を守り継ぐことの大切さを強く実感し、独自のデザインと木工スタイルを確立していきました。
2016年、スウェーデンのマイスター国家試験でほぼ満点に近い成績を収め、スウェーデン王国から銀賞を受賞しました。また、コペンハーゲンのデンマーク・キャビネットメーカー協会のメンバーとして招待を受け、2017年にはデンマーク・デザイン博物館での展覧会にも参加しています。
現在メルボルンに戻り、オーストラリア最古の現役アーティストコミュニティであるMontsalvatのアーティスト・イン・レジデンスとなりました。この美しい歴史的環境の中で、日本と北欧の伝統的な木工技術を日々磨き上げながら、多くの人々にその魅力を伝え、広めていくことを目指しています。
