“Sumikko” is a Japanese word meaning “corner” or “hidden corner” of a room.

One of the defining characteristics of my work is that it may not stand out at first glance. However, the more closely you look, the more you discover — hidden details, subtle craftsmanship, and playful or meaningful touches. You might not notice them right away, but one day they will catch your eye. I design and craft pieces that you will cherish for many years to come.

The name “Sumikko” dates back to my childhood. When I was in primary school, I loved sitting in the back corner of the classroom by the window. It was a spot where the teacher could barely see me, so I could quietly stare out at the sky, read comic books, or even eat my lunch without being noticed… It was my own private sanctuary.

Decades later, I still work in my little studio tucked away in a “corner” of Melbourne, gazing out the window at the sky while crafting each piece.

「sumikko（すみっこ）」とは、部屋の「隅」や「隠れた角」を意味する日本語です。

​

私の作品の特徴は、一見目立たないところにあります。でもよく見ると、さまざまな隠れた要素が詰まっています。見えない細部まで丁寧に作り込んであったり、気づかない場所にさりげなくサインを刻印してあったり…時には意味を込めたものだったり、遊び心のあるものだったり。最初は気がつかないかもしれませんが、いつかふとした瞬間に発見していただける。そんな長く愛せる作品を、日々デザイン・製作しています。

この「sumikko」という名前の由来は、私の幼少期に遡ります。小学生の頃、私は教室の一番後ろの隅の窓際の席に座るのが大好きでした。先生からあまり見えない位置だったので、授業中は窓から空をぼーっと眺めたり、こっそり漫画を読んだり、気づかれないようにお弁当を食べたり…まさに私だけのプライベート空間でした。

そして何十年経った今でも、私はメルボルンの「すみっこ」にある小さなアトリエで、窓から空をぼーっと眺めながら、今日も作品づくりに励んでいます。​
