The concept for this gateleg table was born from childhood memories of playing hide-and-seek. I used to hide beneath chests of drawers and tables, gazing up at the unseen undersides of furniture. There, I would wonder — “Why is it made like this?” and “How is it all held together?”
Even thirty years later, most people never notice the bottom of a seat, the inside of a drawer, or the underside of a table. For me, however, these hidden surfaces are where a maker’s true personality and craftsmanship shine most purely.
This table turns the spotlight on the side of craft we rarely see. “Iki” (粋) — a Japanese word that here means “hidden Japanese beauty” and “hidden Japanese craftsmanship.” It may not reveal itself at first glance, but one day it will quietly appear — like a secret time capsule passed from one craftsman to the next.
このゲートレッグテーブルのコンセプトは、子供の頃のかくれんぼの思い出から生まれました。 タンスやテーブルの下に隠れて、普段目にすることのない家具の裏側を眺めながら、「どうしてこんな風に作られているんだろう」「どうやって組み立てられているんだろう」と考えていたのです。
30年経った今でも、座面の底や引き出しの内側、テーブルの裏側に目を留める人は少ないかもしれません。 しかし私にとっては、そここそが作り手の個性や職人技が最も純粋に表れる場所なのです。
このテーブルは、私たちが普段目にすることのない「工芸の裏側」に光を当てた作品です。 「粋（Iki）」とは、「隠れた日本の美」「隠れた日本の職人技」という意味。 最初は見つけられなくても、いつかふとした瞬間に気づくかもしれません。 それはまさに、職人から次の世代へとそっと手渡される、隠されたタイムカプセルのようなものです。
